Internal politics haunt chiefs?

In the end, Chiefs made history by winning the Coca-Coca Cup and the league title for the first time in 2008. It was a fabulous season for Chiefs. The club remained unbeaten in 35 games - a record which will take sometime for any club to break.

Most people expected the Kgatleng outfit to build on the 2008 success but last year when they surrendered the title to Gaborone United (GU), reports started emerging that all was not well in the Magosi camp. Some committee members were accused of misusing funds. It was a below par performance as Chiefs ended the season trophyless with the only notable achievement being runners-up in the league.

This season the issue of misuse of money by officials has once again surfaced. It is understood that some supporters are up in arms and want the current committee to be forced out. To make matters worse, club officials are said to be pulling in different directions.  An inside source at Chiefs told Sport Monitor this week that unless remedial measures are taken, Magosi will never be the same again. 'We have to admit that there is a problem but this is not the right time to address it. People tend to be in a comfort zone when the team is winning and only realise that there is something wrong when results are not coming. We all have to focus on finishing the league and take it from there. People should not blame Molome alone because he has done a lot for this club. The supporters also deserve to be blamed because we cannot have a situation where we take close to two years without having an AGM (Annual General Meeting),' the source said.

The source criticised the club spokesperson Clifford Mogomotsi for not playing his role of informing supporters about what is happening. He said it is not right for supporters to keep guessing what is going on because they will end up getting wrong information. 'It is a pity that we have given the league title easily to Township Rollers.

People failed to address the problems when they started showing, but right now it is too late. There are many things which are not done right especially when it comes to funds,' said the source.

But Mogomotsi said that as far as he is concerned, there is no crisis at the club. He challenged those who have proof that the committee is abusing funds to come forward and provide it. 'For the past five years, we have been running this club on a huge budget. The records are there for everyone to see and anyone who is suspicious can come forward and confirm the state of affairs. I am surprised to hear people saying these stories because we have been struggling to make ends meet since we have a budget of over P150,000 every month,' he said.

Mogomotsi added that people must understand he is not a convener of meetings and they cannot call a general assembly when there is no serious agenda. He dismissed accusations that he is not doing enough to inform the supporters on what is happening at the club. He said he communicates with branch chairmen on a regular basis.

'The chairpersons are the ones who are supposed to pass information to the supporters. If there is a chairman who is not doing his job, they must tell us. People must also understand that we don't discuss our matters in the media,' he added. He said they have not lost hope in the title race and anything is possible. He pointed out that it is important to note that they are not only focusing on the league but the Coca-Cola Cup also.
