Selebi-Phikwe hosts inaugural Geosearch golf tourney

There has been no golfing action at the club since the year began after the Barclays Bank Open was postponed to August. But tomorrow, the Geosearch tournament takes place from 10am. Top golfers in the country are expected to take part.

Selebi-Phikwe golfers Shane Granger, Leroy Pearmain, and Johannes Moilwa are among favourites to win the title although the tournament can brew upsets.  Selebi-Phikwe Golf Club competition secretary, Gabriel Tjitjo said Geosearch, a drilling company operating in the mining town has seen it fit to sponsor the tournament. He said four golfers who recently received their handicaps will be in action this weekend.

'We are doing well in terms of developing new golfers despite the situation in our town. We are calling all members of the public interested in playing the sport to come forward. People must know that golf is a sport just like any other; it is not a sport for the rich only,' said Tjitjo. He added that Selebi-Phikwe has produced renowned golfers Diane Lucas, Peter Podise, Walter Seokemong, Oganeditse Marata, and Charlton Makoko despite the challenges it faces. He said the junior national team has Selebi-Phikwe youngsters, Pearmain and Shane Granger Junior.
