Over 40 security guard companies de-listed

Controller of security guard services, Ernest Nthobelang says that failure to renew licenses on time is in violation of Section 9 as read with Regulation 4 and 5 of the Control of Security Guard Services Act Cap 21:07.

Nthobelang says that usually an expiry date is indicated on the license and it should be renewed two months before its expiry date. He revealed that some of the de-listed companies have been operating since January with expired licenses, which he says is criminal.  He says that operators should cease their services immediately after the expiry date if the license is not renewed.  'They have been operating illegally though we have de-listed them,' he said.

Nthobelang says there is usually a fine that starts accumulating from the first day following the expiry date. 'Usually the charge is P500 each day from the expiry date,' he said. He explained that usually they (government) should take immediate action on companies that operate on expired licenses but they are failing to take action immediately due to shortage of officials and inadequate time for them to move around the country addressing such issues.

'Due to various reasons like shortage of staff we find it cumbersome for us to run around and look for companies that operate illegally,' he said.   However, Nthobelang says that they usually engage in compliance checks to identify other security service offences that do not necessarily involve licensing.
