The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in the upstairs storeroom of Sheet Street which trades in bedding. Shops had not yet opened at the time of the incident and fire fighters had to break into the ceiling to put out the fire.
Station commander at Broadhurst Police Station, Counsel Moyo said while they are yet to establish the cause of the fire, he suggested it may have been the geyser that triggered it. Close to seven shops had to move their stock out of the building because the smoke from the fire had clouded the shopping complex. The area manager of CB Stores, Nobantu Baatshwaana said they were moving their stock to their warehouse until the place is fixed.
Baatshwaana said they are still assessing the extent of the damage as smoke on its own has already affected their stock.
Michael Eddie of Truworths said the outbreak of fire has led to a loss in trade as it is not certain when shops will reopen. Shops opposite Sheet Street were not affected.
