Gwandu turns down SuperSport

Zimbabwean said this week that he was not happy with the arrangements proposed by a South Africa-based 'agent' hence he refused to honour the invite for trials at the club.

'It is true that I had secured trials at SuperSport but I later refused because of the arrangements that had been put in place. The agent who was organising the trials was saying I should bring money for accommodation and food. I felt that was a bit strange so I refused to go,' Gwandu told Mmegi Sport. Last month, Gwandu  impressed Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates, during trials and he hopes to join them in the new season.

'Pirates are a professional side and it's up to you, as a player, to get there and perform because there is nothing to worry about; everything is there.

I felt at home while I was there, the reception was incredible,' he said.

The lanky defender explained how the South African media picked up the reports linking him to a trial stint at SuperSport. 'The guy who was organising the trials is a friend to Cebo Manyapelo (radio personality), so he told him. So I think Cebo may have mentioned something about the trials on radio,' Gwandu said.

The rock-solid defender is hopeful of a move to Pirates after impressing their coach, Ruud Krol.

Gwandu, together with his Rollers' teammate, Terrence Mandaza, was meant to pen a deal with the Bucs late last month but Pirates' chairman, Irvine Khoza, was held up with World Cup preparations.

The Pirates' boss is the chairman of the World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC) and was busy preparing for the ongoing global soccer showpiece at the time. Gwandu, winner of two league titles in the past two seasons in Botswana, has made it clear that he wants a fresh challenge. He believes a move to South Africa will grant him such an opportunity.
