Khama to open Damuchujenaa projects

The projects are the Kgotla office, Sedibe Primary School, disaster single-room structures and a bus stop shelter.Selebi-Phikwe Lions Club president Siva Prasad told Mmegi in an interview yesterday that they built the bus shelter after being approached by Mmadinare Member of Parliament (MP) and Minerals, Energy and Water Resources Minister, Ponatshego Kedikilwe. He said residents had been complaining to their MP about being drenched by rain and suffering under weather conditions when waiting for transport. He explained that the construction of the shelter was made possible by the donation by Seema Enterprises.

He said the shelter was built at a cost of P30, 000. 'Lions Club does not have funds and that is why I took the decision to ask for assistance from Seema, which is my family business that is operated by my wife, daughter and son. They did not give me any problems when I asked for the donation because they have been involved in community activities before and they are also Lions Club members,' he said.

He mentioned that Seema has branches in Gaborone, Selebi-Phikwe and Francistown and another branch will be opening in Bobonong this month.

Prasad said it was expensive to build the shelter in Damuchujenaa because of the distance from Selebi-Phikwe and they had to transport material and labour to the site at their own costs. He stated that they are excited that the project they have built is part of the projects that will be opened by President Khama.

He mentioned that Lions Club together with Seema will be building two bus shelters in Selebi-Phikwe and revive the children's park in Botshabelo Location.

They are also willing to complete the planned projects before end of the year. He added that they have also built another bus shelter in Tobane. Prasad said Lions Club is planning to visit 12 villages around Selebi-Phikwe and conduct free blood pressure, sugar level and eye tests.

'We will be donating reading glasses to the elderly who have a problem with sight. Lions donated 180 spectacles during testing that was done early this year. We are checking blood pressure and sugar level because they are some of the causes of blindness amongst many people,' he said.

He mentioned that eye testing was recently done at the Re ka Kgona Centre and the turnout was overwhelming. He said the testing was part of the Lions Club International First Sight programme, adding that it is a global initiative to fight the major causes of preventable and avoidable blindness. Prasad explained that Lions Club is not for the rich but for people with community service minds and they are just a charity movement. He said Lions Club would be holding a fund-raising dinner tomorrow at Makhubu Club to raise money for future projects.MP Kedikilwe is expected to attend.
