Judge sports through all codes - Kgathi

He told the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Francistown on Saturday that sports is more than football. He said sport in the country continue to be judged through football but this should not be the case because other disciplines are excelling. 'The recent performance by the Zebras in their encounter with Chad and Tunisia made us proud as a nation but we will become even more proud if it could be emulated by most sport codes. Sport is more than football, we need to prepare better for all games,' Kgathi said.

He added that centres of excellence are an integral part of sports development. 'Centres of sport excellence are very important to the continuous talent identification and development,' he stressed.

BNSC chairperson, Daniel Tau, expressed concern at the lack of sports development in the north. He said there are promising athletes in the region who are forced to migrate to the south in search of better opportunities.

'BNSC has to focus on this area as we have very promising athletes from this region. We have realised that sport development in the north is slow compared to the south. We have opened a BNSC office in Francistown to try and close the gap,' Tau said.

Meanwhile, the BNSC executive committee was given another term at the AGM.
