Stanbic backs inaugural Dintweng Cup

The balls are meant to be used ahead of the academy's inaugural Ernest Dintweng Youth Cup on August 6-8. The tournament will involve primary and junior schools from Tsamaya and surrounding villages like Tshesebe, Themashanga and Mabudzane.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at the weekend, Stanbic Bank Football Club chairman, Onkabetse Morapedi said they decided to support the tournament as a way of giving back to the community. He said the donation is relevant to the community, as it will aid the development of Botswana football from the grassroots.

He said that sports has become more than just a game and is now a career for numerous people. 'Sports nowadays is one of the greatest remunerators which is one other reason we felt obliged to support this initiative,' he said. The Stanbic Bank Football Club is made up of the commercial bank's staff who share a passion for football. 'The team helps us learn how to work as a team on and off the football pitch,' said Morapedi.

SSPA head coach, Ernest Dintweng appreciated Stanbic Bank's gesture and said he hopes the relationship between them continues beyond the tournament. 'Because we have been given 14 footballs, we will divide them equally between the seven villages and ensure the balls are used for the intended purpose,' he said.

The SSPA offers basic training methods to children from seven to 15 years. Dintweng said SSPA does not only help in the development of football but prevents children from engaging in immoral activities such as the consumption of alcohol and drugs. SSPA educates on the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

About 160 players are expected to feature in the Ernest Dintweng Youth Cup. After the tournament, 20 players from each village will be selected for rigorous training. A team to represent the villages in the annual Orange Youth Cup will be chosen from the players.
