BCP, BAM bargain over constituencies

This has not gone down well with the BCP, which performed well in the two constituencies in the 2004 general elections. In South East South, the party got six councillors while in Francistown it emerged second to the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Another source of dispute is BAM's request to be allocated eight constituencies though a task force handling the negotiations puts the party's share at seven.

Despite these disagreements, the convenor of the task force, Modise Maphanyane, has said that the talks between the BCP and BAM are bearing fruit.

The task force met on Wednesday this week specifically to address the adopted loose pact model and the BAM requests. 'Except for those two (South East South and Francistown West) constituencies much has been resolved,' said Maphanyane.

He revealed that the parties are now looking into joint campaigns and other modes of working together such as joint manifestos and rallies.

The task force leaders are scheduled to brief the party presidents today for further consultation on the outcome of the negotiations.
