BDP Tonota North recount in doubt

Onkabetse Daniel who came second after Fidelis Molao in the five-man contested election has indicated he wants a recount. The politician complained of an anomaly during counting after the poll.

'Everybody knew I was the winner given the figures we got from the polling stations. What could have changed the figures at the counting centre?' he was quoted as saying at the time. Yesterday morning Daniel together with Molao and other BDP activists from the constituency met BDP elections board chairman Parks Tafa and other BDP officials in Gaborone over the matter.

Though he could not say whether there would be a recount, Tafa told Mmegi that they looked through the elections material like ballots papers and others used at the elections to verify and see if it is necessary to have a recount. 'We are a party that has very thorough processes. We needed to conduct preliminary investigations to assess and see if their appeal held any substance. You don't just do a recount.  There has to be enough reasons for doing so. We have since finished our investigations and tomorrow (today) we will tell the nation at a press conference in Gaborone what the outcome is,' he said.

Meanwhile Daniel has maintained that he is expecting the elections board to rule in his favour and order a recount. On the other hand, Molao has said he would not say anything 'until I hear what the board has decided,' he said.
