No more livestock in Moshupa

Kgosi Oscar Mosielele said yesterday that after consultation with all wards in the village, it emerged that residents wanted livestock out of the village because they cause conflicts. He said he consulted with the residents and a Kgotla meeting was called where a compromise was reached between farmers and non-farmers that livestock should be relocated.

He said that goats, cows and donkeys are causing havoc in the village because they enter people's compounds and destroy anything they find inside. 'Even the volume of the cases involving livestock that we handled in our court proved that something needed to be done. Already half of farmers have relocated their livestock to the lands so far and the agreement is that no animal should get inside the village,' he explained. He said chicken owners have been advised to build chicken enclosures (dihoko).

He said that from September 1, any animal found in the village would be impounded and kept in council kraals.The animals will only be released after payment of a charge by owners. Animals that are not bailed out by owners will be sold in a public auction. Mosielele said that in many instances, a person owns one or two goats whose whereabouts he or she does not know.

Meanwhile, the MP for Moshupa and Assistant Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mokgweetsi Masisi, has said that removing livestock from the village is a welcome move supported by a majority of residents. He said that livestock is causing havoc in the village and causing conflict. He said that farmers who keep their livestock in the village have cattle posts to keep them. He asserted that the problem is not livestock, but people who refuse to take care of their animals or to employ herdboys.
