Domkrag ministers on a roadshow

The BDP's latest move comes as the breakaway party, the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) is riding the crest of a wave as droves join it, recruited or on their own volition, mainly from the BDP.

In an interview with Mmegi yesterday, the Chairman of the BDP's Culture and Publicity Committee, who is also the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Shaw Kgathi, said the new campaign will start in Tonota North on July 3 where a by-election will be held soon after the death of the constituency's MP, Baledzi Gaolathe, last month.

Kgathi said on the same day, another BDP team will be in Tati East where BMD operative and MP Guma Moyo has built a clinic to reach out to the electorate.

The Tonota North campaign will be led by the Minister of Health, Rev. Dr. John Seakgosing, the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Kitso Mokaila, and the recently appointed BDP Youth Wing chairman by Bontsi Monare.

The Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Ndelu Seretse and the Assistant Minister of Health, Maxwell Motowane will lead the team campaigning in Tati East that will also have people from the BDP's sub-committees.

'We at the BDP have agreed to embark on an aggressive campaign because the media has been spreading false information about us,' Kgathi said. 'We are simply going to be explaining to democrats the truth and that truth is that it is only four MPs who have left the party to join the BMD as opposed to the multitudes being reported.'

Kgathi said they will also tell the democrats that the party has also lost less than 10 councillors out of the 400.The haemorrhage that the BDP is said to be experiencing is not true,' he said.

'This campaign is to assure BDP members that the party is intact, united and ready to serve Batswana. We will be dispatching other groups to the rest of the constituencies in due course.'

Meanwhile, the BDP said on its Facebook page yesterday: 'We confirm that four MPs and less than 10 councillors have left the BDP.

Over the past five weeks, just under 200 new members have registered at the party office. The 200 does not include numbers being registered at the various structures countrywide.'
