Small stock movements restricted-Kgalagadi

The department has therefore implemented control movements in order to controlled the spread of the disease within and out of Kgalagadi District.

It is said in a press release that movement of small stock out of and in to Kgalagadi district is not allowed.

However, movement of small stock for direct slaughter within Kgalagadi is allowed from flocks clinically free from mange, after inspection and under a veterinary movement permit. Movement of meat and milk derived from the small stock is also allowed within, in to and out of Kgalagadi district without veterinary movement permit. 

It is said that meanwhile, the department is conducting surveillance throughout Kgalagadi and in the immediate neighbouring Southern and Ghanzi districts.

It is said that signs and symptoms of this disease are scratching, generalised loss of hair, thickened and darkened animal skin.  Farmers are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious signs to the nearby veterinary offices.  The Department of Veterinary advices farmers to visit the nearest extension agent or Livestock Advisory Centre for advise on control of the disease.
