Train derails near Tonota

Thirty-seven train carriages veered off the tracks at around one o'clock in the morning, confirmed Tonota Police spokesperson superintendent Lebang Pilot. The train locomotive remained upright.

No one was harmed, and the incident caused no impact to the road except for the rail line that was being maintained at the time of going to press.

The carriages were carrying diesel and the train driver and his companion escaped unharmed, Pilot said.

Efforts to get a comment from the Chief Executive Officer of BR, Taolo Sebonego, proved futile as he was said to be at the scene of the accident at the time of going to press. BR crews were said to be busy making repairs to the tracks and re-railing the carriages, and the line was expected to be re-opened by the end of yesterday (Tuesday). According to Pilot, the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
