UB conducts Culture and Sports Awards

The awards were held under the theme 'Celebrating Students' Achievement in Sports and the Arts'.

The award winners were drawn from different sporting and recreational groups within the university student population.

Diphala Traditional Dance Group scooped the Music and Dance award. The group is well-known and participates at almost all of the University events. The Arts Entrepreneurship and Community Service award  went to  the University of Botswana Work-Camps Association (BUWA) a branch of Botswana Work-Camps Association based in Mochudi.

The Best Student Poet award went to Sesafeleng Morija a young poet whose works promotes Setswana cultural values and norms. Morija has performed at various events on the University campus over the last four years including the annual Vice Chancellor's addresses, intervarsity culture days and cultural diversity days.

The Most Outstanding Cultural Group award went to UB Choir. The choir has performed at various events including the 'Power in the Voice' event hosted by the British Council, Parliament events, and musical concerts. The choir recently organized a concert under the theme 'Duma Botswana' where institutional choirs and community choirs were invited to perform.

The Media Student award had one nominee who subsequently won the award. It was won by Tlamelo Ramodise who is a final year Media Studies student majoring in  Public Relations and Television. Ramodise is a freelance journalist at Yarona FM and Echo newspaper. He has also worked at UB Horizon, the campus newsletter, as entertainment editor, designer, writer and advertising agent. Her TV work includes working as an Assistant Set Runner on South Africa's Soul City drama production.

 Best Design (Textiles) Student went to Design final year student Kebafilwe Molaolwe scooped the Best Design (Textiles) award. Molaolwe, a Home Economics student, majors in Fashion and Fabrics (Textiles) and was the top student in her year.

UB Dance-sport Club won the Team of the Year award.  The club recently won eight gold, six silver medals and six bronze medals at the Metsweding Ya Demean competition in Pretoria, South Africa.

Speaking at the Awards Ceremony Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Lydia Nyathi-Ramahobo, announced the appointment of Peer Ambassadors. These students are appointed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Student Affairs to carry out ambassadorships for sports and recreation; and culture and arts according to Nyathi-Ramahobo.

The ambassadors are also expected to work with the Public Affairs department to promote the university. The students appointed are Laba Mokete, a final year Law student and McDonald Rakgare a former SRC president. Mokete has actively volunteered in various community and UB activities and is a former chairperson of the UB choir. Rakgare hosts a sports show on Yarona FM.
