Malaysian students in drugs scandal

Five of the students are alleged to have tested positive to drugs while the other five were arrested for failure to produce their passports to the police officers. According to information reaching Mmegi the students have been languishing in jail since last Friday and the five who were not in possession of their passports were expected to be released yesterday.

The public relations officer in the Ministry of Education, Godfrey Kalange said they are yet to communicate with their Malaysian based officers. 'We have heard rumors like that and we will get in touch with our Malaysian-based office to confirm these rumors,' he said yesterday. This is not the first time students studying in Malaysia have been embroiled in drug scandals. Last year two female students were awaiting trial behind bars for possession of drugs. Punishment for possession of drugs in Malaysia carries a death sentence or life imprisonment.
