Maxy labels debut gospel album a huge success

The Otse born musician has just dropped a gospel album for 2010, and claims requests for the album in music shops has been overwhelming, surpassing any she has seen in her ten years in the music industry.

Maxy's gospel release, E e ke dumetse (Yes, I believe), is inspired by familiar sounds from traditional African churches, Pentecostals, and main stream hymns. 'It is attracting interest from just everyone because almost all of Batswana are Christians in a way', she claimed over the phone as she announced that she was on her way to the church, but refused to divulge which church she goes to.

' It remains the business of my husband and daughter which church I go to, it is not in the interest of the public', Maxy said.

' I'm not singing about my life, I am a person of flesh and blood, I'm not singing for any church...', she told Mmegi in a phone interview yesterday.

Maxy claims turning to gospel symbolises a turn around in lifestyle but immediately declared that she is not an angel. ' I can flop anytime, so people should not try to copy what I'm doing. I prefer they follow the message I'm preaching', Maxy said.

' Time will tell how long I will be singing gospel. I don't want to say when I will be releasing my cultural music album, I don't even want to talk about it right now because I am selling gospel now', she responded.

Maxy claims her fans have been urging her to do gospel because her vocals are so well suited to gospel music. ' This is a celebration album, I also want to share with my fans out there that God is there. In my privacy I kneel down and pray, maybe they can do that as well', she said.

But Maxy also claims she also believes in God and in Badimo, ancestral worship, which she so much glorifies in her cultural music. ' Ke motho yo ke dumelang mo Modimong, le badimo ba me(I  believe in God and in my ancestral spirits).

' Through this gospel release, I am preaching the word of God and doing business as well. Gospel is about the message but it is not free, somebody has to pay bills, this is business, music is my business'.

Although she was not willing to reveal her cultural music plans, it is understood Maxy already has a gospel album recorded and ready for release later in the year. She is currently preparing to release a gospel music DVD for the nine-track album.  Maxy's gospel album has been accompanied by a separate comedy release on DVD, where she stars in the short films. That means she is actually releasing three products, the music DVD, the Comedy DVD and the gospel album, all at the same time.

Maxy started diversifying her music works two years ago when she recorded two pop albums through a group called Digauta, where she is the lead vocalist. The group has since released two afro pop albums, both hailed a success.
