Releases like Italente and Ndizize Nkosi have failed to create the same hype, which followed Isiponono's release. Like many others, who left their home countries to try their luck in Botswana, Mazolwana moved from East London, South Africa, to Gaborone a few years back and is now based here though he continues to record his music in South African studios. But the change of name and location, which, he had hoped would help change his fortunes, seems to have failed and he believes that changing his tune is the only way to get back on top of his game.
Buju Muju, the man who is credited as the master of house music, has taken Mazolwana under his wing, added to his disco melodies some heavy house beats - and the duo are expected to dish out a mellow-album that should make both house and disco lovers happy when it comes out at the end of next month.
Tshukudu ya poo is the name of the new album which was sampled to revellers in Kanye who attended Mazolwana's show on Friday night. The talented singer believes he still has the same strength of a rhino bull and is far from finish, hence the name of the album.
'My music has been only selling well in Botswana because the people here still love disco very much but I could not break into the South African market because people there are no longer interested in disco no matter how good it is. House music is currently ruling the airwaves and I am sure it will be like that for many more years to come,' Mazolwana told Showtime after his performance.
Despite the low turnout at the show, which also featured By 2, Mazolwana was as energetic as ever. Though people seemed to enjoy his new house tunes, they got carried away when he played tracks such as Ntjyilontjyilo. It doesn't bother him anyway, as he says he believes that his new brand of disco was just what the fans need.
'I will show people with the release of this album that I am a real rhino bull, and working with the experts like Buju Muju was actually meant to ensure that we don't go wrong,' he said
.
It is not only Buju Muju who has had a hand at the piece, Mazolwana's old time producer Thomas 'Tafula' Madiba brought in the disco melodies.
Street Gang was billed to perform at the show but failed to pitch up. By 2, perhaps their spirits damped by the poor turnout, put up an uninspiring performance. They are usually an entertaining outfit, but on Friday night they lacked the zeal to have the audience seriously engaged.
