My Star Show Starts In Earnest

The show continues this weekend in Lobatse and in Palapye the following weekend, with aspiring contestants parting with P200 to register for the auditions.

The Star show is in its fourth year and has been consistently entertaining Btv viewers. The winners of the competition are usually taken to the United Kingdom (UK)  for sight seeing. They also have their albums released by the producers of the show, Pop Star Botswana, owned by Master D Sesinyi, a local reggae artist and businessman.

So far four albums have been released under the Pop Star Botswana label. The company last year released two albums, one for the ultimate winner, Kitso Selato, and  a combined album for runners-up, Naledi and Dineo.

Last year a Pop Star Botswana album by Tebogo Tlhagadikgora won a BOMU award in the Best R&B category to become the first Pop Star album to win any acclaim since the concept was introduced.

Beyond Botswana borders however, Pop Star Botswana products are yet to make any visible penetration. The show has been supported by the likes of Mascom wireless for the last three years, while the Department of Arts and Culture also pumps funds into its production.

Last year the owner of the show appealed to President Khama to cause Btv to start paying his company for the show and it is understood, the Office of the President (OP), under whom now Btv falls, have successfully intervened.
