Matobo festive season tourney hailed a success

At least P12,000 was raised from gate takings which was used as prize money for the teams that participated. Ntobgwe Young Fighters emerged the winners in the round robin tournament and pocketed P2,460 for their efforts. Second-placed Matobo Movement received P2,220 while Flying Squad were rewarded with P2,060 for coming third.

Red Lions were fourth and walked away with P2,035 while Nshamba Young Stars got P1,960 after coming fifth. Brothers were consoled with P1,935 after anchoring the six-team standings. Mompoloki Kgalemang of Red Lions emerged the top goal scorer while Henry Pelo from Matobo Movement was judged the player of the tournament. Nshamba provided the goalkeeper of the tournament.

Ntobgwe dominated again in the Matobo Shield Cup, beating Flying Squad 4-1 on penalties after a 0-0 deadlock in regulation time. The Shield Cup was hosted to raise funds for the Matobo Village Development Committee (VDC).  Ntobgwe received P318,00 while Flying Squad got P191 after emerging runners-up. Malumbela said the tournament was aimed at keeping the youth out of the street and carried anti-alcohol and road safety messages.

'The village committee was pleased with the tournament as sport unites a community. People were sensitised on the dangers of alcohol and there were road safety messages,' Malumbela said.
