Statement by Kofi Annan on Haiti earthquake

This is a tragic blow for a country already facing many major challenges. Among the thousands feared dead or wounded are many United Nations staff. They include good friends and former colleagues with whom I worked closely. Hedi Annabi, the head of the mission, was one of my right hand men during my time at the United Nations.

My heart goes out to them and their families, the Haitian people and all those affected, as they struggle to understand and cope with this unimaginable catastrophe.

I urge the international community and those with capacity to give, to respond to the United Nations Secretary-General's appeal for assistance. And to do so simply, willingly and generously.'
