BSA raises funds for Venezuela-bound women's team

The activities include tea parties, a sponsored walk and a dinner. The tea parties have been going on but so far, BSA president Marumo Morule cannot say how much has been raised.

The women's team needs at least P800,000 to participate in the world championships. Morule said the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) has promised to pay for air tickets, which accounts for 60 percent of the budget for the trip.

He said that players are expected to assist the association with fundraising.  Due to financial constraints, the team will not play international friendly matches to prepare for the competition.

'We do not have money and there is nothing we can do,' Morule said. He said this would be a setback as the team will not get enough practice. The final squad will be selected next week to start intensive training on March 22.

Botswana qualified for the competition by virtue of being Zone VI champions. South Africa is the other African country taking part in the 16-nation competition. The Botswana team has failed to take part in the last two editions of the world championships because of financial challenges. Botswana first took part in the event in 1994.
