Chief Justice Resigns

Nganunu's resignation was confirmed by the High Court spokesperson Janet Mudongo, who also added that it will be effective immediately, meaning he will not address the Legal Year opening today in Lobatse.

Mudongo said her office would release a statement today because they were still busy preparing for the opening of the legal year yesterday.

Nganunu's resignation follows his hospitalisation at a South African facility where he was admitted last November after a heart attack.

Justice Maruping Dibotelo has been acting Chief Justice since then and he will address the Legal Year opening today.

Justice Nganunu was appointed Chief Justice in 1997 at the age of 56 after the death of Moleleki Mokama. Although he started his career as a lawyer in the Attorney General's chambers, rising to be acting Attorney General, Nganunu is also a former permanent secretary. He is only the second citizen Chief Justice.

Justice Nganunu is the second high profile figure to resign in a week due to poor health, following the resignation of former Trade Minister Baledzi Gaolathe, whose resignation was announced last Friday.
