Masunga rocked by suicide

Last week alone, three young men ended their lives while another was rescued before he could commit suicide. One of the deceased was an 18-year-old boy who was found by his brother hanging from the roof of the house they share in Makaleng village.

The two brothers hail from Hukuntsi and live in rented accommodation in Makaleng. The older brother who works at Ntimbale Dam found his younger sibling hanging from the roof of his spare bedroom on Sunday at dawn and reported the matter to the police.

The deceased did his Form Five at Macha Senior Secondary School in Kang and was waiting for results. He did not leave any suicide note.

In another incident, an 18-year-old man studying at Masunga Senior Secondary School was found hanging from a tree in the early hours of Saturday morning. The teenager committed suicide a few metres from the back fence of the school.

Students and teachers from the school are still having difficulty in coming to terms with the suicide. Masunga Police Station commander, Superintendent Mpho Modisaotsile said they found a note in the young man's trouser pockets. The police are using the note for investigations.

The two incidents came a few days after another young man who was alleged to have had problems in his love relationship was found hanging from the roof of his rented house in Masunga on February 3. The man who was cohabiting with his girlfriend and mother of his three-year-old son decided to take his life in the same house they lived in. He worked as a security officer at a firm currently engaged by the council at the landfill. In another case, a man from Nlaphkhwane village was rescued by neighbours from hanging himself.

Reliable sources say the young man confided to his relatives that he was in deep debt and could not accept his situation and the best way out was to end his life. Currently, he is undergoing treatment and counselling.
