Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital Holds Wellness Day

Moagi Gaborone, Health Information and Promotion Officer encouraged staff to stay positive and motivated, and said their actions have an instant and profound impact on the lives of their clients.  'By and large your state of motivation can easily influence the state of mind of your clients to be optimistic and positive about the future and life in general.  As you are aware, there is no health without mental health,' he said.

He advised staff to be conscious of the hospitals' goals, to identify with and develop a sense of ownership, so that they stay motivated to contribute towards the wellness of the health institution. 'When you understand where the organisation is going and how it is planning to get there and you see your role in helping it get there, you are most likely to be motivated to make your contribution,' he said.

Dr. Zoran Zoric, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist said dealing with mental issues can be stressful for staff.  In light of this he stressed the need for staff to receive adequate support and motivation for them to deliver effective services.

'Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital has been faced with many challenges such as shortage of staff, inadequate resources, equipment, which means that dealing with psychiatric patients is stressful.  Therefore such an event as this wellness day is useful in helping the staff to boost morale,' he said.

The hospital prides itself in its recreation facilities like a football field, athletics track, gymnasium, tennis and basketball courts.  Humphrey Tshabangu, the Acting Hospital Matron, told Monitor that the hospital has a bed capacity of 300 patients and also receives outpatients. He said that though the hospital has not been officially opened, it started operating from around August last year. However, the hospital is expected to be officially opened not later than April this year, revealed Tshabangu.
