This shows a slight increase from 300 accidents recorded during the previous week. Meanwhile, the number of people who have lost their lives due to road accidents this year has increased as compared to the previous two years. At least 43 people have lost their lives since January this year as compared to 36 and 40 in 2009 and 2008 respectively.

In one notable incident, a three year old boy of Mmopane village died after he fell and was overrun by a motor vehicle he was a passenger in.  In another incident in Gaborone, a 56-year old South African man died after losing control of the motor vehicle he was driving.

The police have also charged 1, 048 drivers for driving above the prescribed speed limit during the week under review, an increase of about 200 compared to the 848 drivers charged during the previous week. In addition, 288 drivers were also charged for driving through red traffic lights as compared to 157 charged during the previous week.

Botswana Police Service would therefore like to appeal to motorists to always exercise caution while driving and to always obey road signs and markings to avoid road accidents. Furthermore, the police will like to warn the public that they would continue mounting sporadic roadblocks and speed traps to deal with wayward drivers.
