Kazungula police arrest duo carrying P400,000

Speaking to the police District Administration Officer (DAO)based in Kasane, Superintendent Sazi Benson Mphinyane, confirmed the incident yesterday.

'We were working on a tip-off following information that there was a BMW car destined to cross the border at the Kazungula ferry border last Saturday,' explained Mphinyane.

He added, 'Upon searching the car which had two occupants in it, we found a stack money in Pula notes at the value of about P380,000 kept in a briefcase. We were also able to recover some other monies from the two men's pockets, which inflated the figure to about P400,000.'

Although the police were reluctant to disclose the nationalities of the two suspects who are currently in police custody, it is apparent that the duo is Zambian.

The two have since appeared before the Magistrate court Monday, and have been remanded in custody pending further police investigations.

Mphinyane has also indicated that the duo has been slapped with a holding charge of possession of suspected stolen property. The BMW car and the monies are being held by police as exhibits.

'Besides establishing the rightful owners of the motor vehicle in our possession, we also want to establish if the money we have recovered is not dirty,' further explained Mphinyane.

He emphasised that it was not advisable for businesspeople to go around carrying huge amounts of money.

His advise was that people travelling across the border or doing business locally should find out from their banks, what forms of monies to carry.

Mphinyane also emphasised that travellers should demand from the bankers, what limits of cash should be in their possession at any given time.

The explanation rendered by the arrested duo to the police that they have business in Botswana, was not convincing to the police who upon arresting them, preferred to conduct further investigations than rely on their word.
