We must win-Sandaka

The gifted striker said a win tomorrow will boost their confidence ahead of the second leg tie at the end of the month.

“The secret is to make sure we win our home game because that will mean we go for the second leg without any pressure. We must aim for a win, be it a 1-0 or 2-1. That will boost our confidence when we visit them for the return leg,” Sandaka told Mmegi Sport.

The Zimbabwean goal poacher, who once attracted Pirates’ interest warns his team mates of the dangers of giving the Buccaneers too much respect.

“I always tell them that Pirates are no different from us, maybe the only difference is the facilities that they use in South Africa. Football is the same everywhere and the rules are the same. What matters is how we apply ourselves on the field of play,” he added.

Sandaka draws inspiration from his former club, Monomotapa of Zimbabwe, who beat South Africa’s Ajax Cape Town last year in the same competition.

He is happy with the preparations that the club has been making since the players went to camp on Sunday. “Everyone is happy about the preparations.

The management has made it possible that we camp for a week ahead of the Pirates tie and it is proving to be positive. We have new guys in the team and this is the first time we have spent a week together as a team. We are training together, spending time as a team, something that brings togetherness and helps everyone focus on the job at hand,” he said.

He stated that things have not been rosy for GU on the domestic front but the CAF campaign is a different ball-game altogether. He added that everyone at GU is keen to succeed in the prestigious tournament.

Pirates are also struggling in the South African League, scoring only twice in their last five matches. However, Sandaka said GU must not read too much into the statistics.

“Pirates have won this competition before and obviously want to repeat that feat. So anything can happen on match day. Who knows, maybe it will be their day,” he said.

He urged local football fans to come in large numbers to support GU, as they are representing Botswana.
