37 missing exam papers found in deputy head office

Botswana Examination Council spokesperson, Charles Keikothae confirmed yesterday that they discovered that about 37 exam papers English paper II for Moraka Junior Secondary School in the Southern District went missing and were only discovered on Thursday when their marking was to commence.

Keikothae said upon investigations, the papers were traced back to the school where they were found in the deputy headmaster's office.

'Normally after the examinations have been written, any other materials that have been used during the examination session are put away in a safe place. That is where the missing examination papers were found', Keikothae said.

He stressed that missing of examination papers is not new as it has happened before in the history of examinations. Keikothae revealed that the head of department at Moraka Junior School wrote a letter explaining what really happened after the examination, which led to the mix up. However, he could not be drawn into disclosing what the letter stated or who was to blame for the incident.

For his part, the publicity Secretary, Botswana Secondary Education Teachers Union (BOSETU), Mogomotsi Motshegwa said the new developments stress their position that this year examinations were not run properly. Motshegwa said the multiple irregularities engulfing the examinations show that whoever was running the examinations was not vigilant enough to safeguard the integrity of the examinations.

Motshegwa was concerned that while the marking of examinations is coming to an end irregularities are being reported. 'We are not happy at the way the examinations were run and we want a healing process going forward', Motshegwa said.

He said the chaotic situation under which the examinations were written show that both parties need each other. 'The chaotic situation under which the examinations were written show that we and our colleagues at BEC need each other and we need to tone down and find a lasting solution to the problem', Motshegwa said.
