Mlazie dies

Former Assistant Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Duncan Mlazie, has died, Mmegi has established.

Though his family could not be contacted, a family friend has confirmed the passing away of Mlazie yesterday.

'Yes, it has been confirmed to me by his son, Thabo,' said the family friend, Gomolemo Motswaledi of the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD).

Malzie was the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Member of Parliament for Chobe until 2009 when he lost to Gibson Nshimwe of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP).

He was the first Motswana to become MD of Barclay Bank Botswana.

Meanwhile, Mmegi is informed that the Chairman of the Botswana Democratic Party, Daniel Kwelagobe, has been admitted to a private hospital in Gaborone for an undisclosed illness.

Speaking to Mmegi, Motswaledi, who is also a long time political ally of the BDP leader, said he had spent hours with Kwelagobe yesterday.

'We joked and laughed together,' he said. 'You could see he was recuperating well.' Motswaledi also revealed that former chairman of Gantsi District Council, Walter Mathuukwane, suffered a stroke last Sunday 'an hour after we had a successful rally there'. Mathunkwane is a member of the BMD. More health news is that former BCP president and MP for Selibe-Phikwe West, Gilson Saleshando, was discharged from a South African medical facility after suffering an illness. His son, Dumelang Saleshando, told Mmegi that his father was recuperating. 'My father is doing well,' he said. 'He is at his home in Phikwe.'
