Chiefs, Rollers forego CAF competitions

While Chiefs are still toying with the idea of taking advantage of late registration next month, Rollers are categorical that they will not participate in continental competitions. Rollers' managing director, Somerset Gobuiwang told Mmegi Sport yesterday that they have decided to concentrate on defending the be MOBILE Premier League title instead of venturing into Africa. 'We have decided to concentrate on defending the league. It is our priority to win this league (be MOBILE) again,' he explained.

After winning a double last season, Rollers were eligible to participate in the CAF Champions League as national champions or the CAF Confederations Cup as Coca-Cola Cup winners. Chiefs finished runners-up in the national league and Coca-Cola Cup and were eligible for any of the African competitions depending on which one Rollers chose. By yesterday, Chiefs' spokesman, Clifford Mogomotsi, said they   were toying with the idea of taking advantage of late registration in January.

After the Zebras and GU's unprecedented exploits in African competitions this year, it was expected that Rollers and Chiefs  would want to emulate the good runs in continental football. GU were just one step away from qualifying for the lucrative group stages of the CAF Champions League before they were eliminated by Zimbabwe glamour boys, Dynamos. The Zebras are just one game away from a historic qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations after an impressive performance highlighted by two victories over continental powerhouse, Tunisia.
