Motswaledi's property to be auctioned Jan 2011

Motswaledi incurred the cost after he lost an appeal against President Ian Khama, where he was challenging Khama's executive powers.

Besides Khama, other respondents included his former party, the Botswana Democratic Party.

In their Notice of Sale in Execution deputy sheriffs indicate that by the 14th of January 2011 they will auction Motswaledi's Toyota Camry, Mercedez Benz E240, a television set, an eight piece dining suite, two piece sofas, two piece maroon sofas, electric fridge, three wooden chairs and LG entertainment speakers.

The auction will take place at ten in the morning at Broadhurst Police Station.

In an interview with Mmegi, BMD interim treasurer Guma Moyo said he sees political malice on the side of the BDP. He said the BDP has gone on the warpath against BMD and is using the debt to spite the party (BMD).

'Having your property attached is not a death sentence. The issue that took us to court (of immense executive powers of the president) still remains. I know the money has to be paid. But personally I hate intimidation. They should not intimidate us,' he said.

Moyo said even if the sheriffs were to auction the listed property, the BDP will not recoup the P351 000 owed by Motswaledi from the auction.

'We have P30 000 and I promised to add P70 000 to the figure so that it's P100 000, but the deputy sheriff insisted that he was under instructions to attach the property. But interestingly they will make as little as P2000 from this auction. It's clear that they don't want money but something else,' he said.

Moyo said they will not pretend that as an opposition party they have a lot of money because they are struggling just like other opposition parties.

He said they depend on the goodwill of party members and supporters.

When contacted for comment BDP executive secretary Dr Comma Serema said the matter is no longer in their hands but the sheriffs, who are in the process of ensuring that the debt is paid.

Meanwhile efforts to solicit a comment from deputy sheriff Tlhopho Ketshabile, who is involved in the auction proved futile as his mobile phone rang unanswered.

Motswaledi could also not be reached for comment as his mobile was not answered yesterday. But last week in a related interview, the BMD leader referred all questions on the matter of sheriffs and Moyo.
