Why coach sidelines 'JJ'

Solomons claims the striker started misfiring after the departure of Botswana coach, David Bright. Ramatlhakwana has seen minimal club action despite being in sparkling form for his country. But at club level, Solomons says he may have been affected by Bright's departure two seasons ago. Bright, now at National First Division side Bay United, is the man who lured Ramatlhakwana from Mochudi Centre Chiefs at the start of the 2008-2009 season.

He then left at the end of the season to join the Port Elizabeth side. Since then, Ramatlhakwana has not played.

Solomons told Mmegi Sport that the Zebras' striker has been mediocre since Bright's exit.

'He is a good player but he has not been himself ever since Bright left. We have tried to speak to him several times but that has not changed anything,' Solomons said.

Interestingly, the 25-year-old has been in good form for the national team. His four goals have put the Zebras on the brink of a first time qualification for the African Nations Cup.

His performance in the qualifiers has not gone unnoticed as ABSA Premiership newcomers Vasco Da Gama are keen to sign him. In fact, reports from South Africa indicate that Vasco coach, Carlos Das Neves is relishing the prospect of partnering the Botswana international with former Bafana Bafana star, Sibusiso Zuma.

However, Santos have indicated that they want Ramatlhakwana to extend his contract with them despite telling him that he is surplus to requirements at the end of last season. He is left with six months on his current deal.

Yesterday, Solomons distanced himself from the contract talks saying they are between the player and the club. 'I am a coach and I have nothing to do with the contract of the player or issues to do with finances so I don't want to comment on that one,' he said.

Attempts by Santos to keep the Botswana striker

has stalled his move to Vasco and the striker admits he is growing increasingly frustrated by the turn of events. Solomons is convinced the striker has what it takes to shine elsewhere.

'It is possible that he can do well at another club because he is a good player.

It happens everywhere that a player doesn't do well at one club and goes on to shine at his next club,' said Solomons. He stated that they have given the Botswana international a chance to prove himself. 'I think we have given him a chance to prove himself but, like I said, he has not been his usual self ever since Bright left. We have looked at him during training and during friendly matches but he has not been impressive,' he added.

Meanwhile, the Santos' mentor spoke highly of Zebras' defensive linkman Boitumelo Mafoko, who is in his second season with the club.

'He is a great player. Once in a while, as a coach, you sit down and give instructions to players and he is one guy who responds very well to instructions. He has done very well,' said Solomons.
