Shoprite chair has 30 days to appeal or lose P6.9m

That's according to a UK Border Agency official contacted by Business Day on Friday afternoon.

'If he doesn't appeal, the UK judicial system will have a wonderful Christmas present from him,' the official who preferred not to be identified, said.

Wiese was stopped in April when he attempted to carry £674, 920 through Heathrow Airport to Luxembourg.

Earlier, he told Moneyweb that 'For tax and other reasons, I wanted to move the money from my bank in London to Luxembourg.'

But the UK Court ruled that the forfeiture would be allowed as it was satisfied that 'the cash was associated with criminality' it said in a statement.

Wiese is chairman of Shoprite, and when contacted on Friday afternoon, the company said Wiese would be issuing a statement later sometime last week.

According to a statement by the UK Border Agency, the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court has given Wiese thirty days to appeal the decision.

Under UK law, travellers entering or leaving the UK with more than £1, 000 in cash may be asked to explain the purpose and source of the money - (BusinessDay)
