Tennis association elects new boss

Tsiang served as the spokesman in the previous committee. He was elected president at the association's annual general meeting in Gaborone on Saturday. He takes over from Judge Mookodi who has been appointed chief executive officer of the Botswana Football Association (BFA).

His vice president is former national tennis star, Petrus Molefe while the treasurer is Kabo Molomo. Nelson Gabofiwe is the secretary general.

Boikobo Gaolebalwe is the technical director (programmes) while Moses Motate will be in charge of the seniors' programme. 

Nelson Amanze who was the secretary general in the outgoing committee has taken over as the new spokesman.

Additional members are Macsha Makhumalo, Obusitswe Seth, Dr Khaulani Fichani and Rajaram Rangaswamy.

The meeting discussed the financial report though some documents are still with the auditors.

In his acceptance speech, Tsiang said he wanted a visionary committee.  He said they should not waste time by criticising the old committee. His aim is to drive tennis to higher achievements with the help of his committee. 

Amanze said the committee is going to plan activities for next year and it is good the tennis fraternity is not characterised by infighting and factionalism.

He said the long-term vision is to spread the game throughout the country in the next 10 years.  He said that Botswana is hosting the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under 18 tournament which started on Sunday.

The tournament has drawn junior players from several countries around the world.  Botswana is represented in the tournament by 20 junior players; 12 boys and eight girls. The boys' team include two South African-based players Innocent Tidimane and Lame Botsoma.

Tidimane who is in his early teens will be making his debut in the tournament.
