Twelve perish in Sunday road accidents

Five others are in hospital with serious injuries.

Senior Superintendent Seabe Maboka of Mochudi Police Station says the first accident involved two 4x4 vehicles that collided head-on near the popular Mosaditshwene Restaurant. The driver of one vehicle and a passenger in the other died on the spot. The cause of the accident has not yet been established.

In another accident on the same night, 10 Zimbabweans died when the vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a BMW sedan at around 2am, near Tlhagale Bridge. 'The deceased include a three-year old child,' says Superintendent Maboka. 'We still cannot ascertain whether the deceased were a family but they were all travelling in the same van.'

While investigations are at an early stage, the police have established that there were only two occupants in the sedan. The names of the deceased are being withheld until their next of kin have been informed.

The accident occurs a week after a Zimbabwean family died in a head-on collision with a truck near Mahalapye. The family was travelling in two cars, one towing the other.
