Former court clerk accused of stealing case docket

Appearing before Village Chief Magistrate Barnabas Nyamadzabo, Mabego, 35, who was based at the Mochudi Magistrate Court is facing a single charge of corruption by a public officer.

The State alleges that Mabego on or about July 15, this year in Mochudi, whilst employed in the Public Service under the Administration of Justice, corruptly accepted P230 as a reward from Samuel Killer Makete, for giving the latter the original criminal record in respect of the criminal case against Makete.

Mabego told the court that he would need some time to look for an attorney to represent him during trial. 'I request that I be given up to a month in which I hope to have secured the services of an attorney to represent me', said Mabego.

State prosecutor Mpho Mmolaiyana told the court that the State intends calling on five witnesses during trial. He urged the court to defer setting of trial dates since Mabego has expressed intentions to engage an attorney.

Magistrate Nyamadzabo told the court that due to the fact that they have a backlog of cases in his court, 'I might be forced to re-assign the case to another magistrate to try it'.

The case was postponed to September 20, when it is expected that Mabego will have an attorney to represent him, for setting of trial dates to commence.
