Zimbabwean 'Prophets/ granted bail

Prophet Joseph Banda and Pastor Andrea Mwayama are alleged to have fraudulently obtained the sum of P11,100 from Tirelo Potlako between December and January 2010. The two accused are said to have tricked the complainant into believing that they could solve her problems, including the profitability of her hair salon.

The magistrate, who was visibly angry with the state, said in his view, he could not establish the particulars of the offence. 'I don't think any court can remand someone for this kind of act,' he said.

This was against the prosecution's request for the accused persons to be remanded in custody because they are not residents of this country. The prosecutor had also said he feared the fact that the accused and the complainant attended the same church. The accused are therefore required to bring a Motswana surety and bind themselves at P1,000.

The magistrate asked the state to bring a third party to prove that the two accused persons are not capable of solving these problems.

The plea was reserved.
