Eskimos celebrate decade in music with DVD release

Eskimos, a group of four who first made a name when they danced for Vee in the late 90s, have even inspired a number of new dance groups to emulate their dance repertoires.

Now 10 years from the time they released their debut album, Back to Kasi with DDS records in 2005, Eskimos are celebrating a decade of trend-setting in the local music circle with a documentary DVD release.

According to Eskimos' manager Mojaboswa Othomile, the DVD will hit the shelves on Thursday and will have, among others, the group's hits of the last 10 years, as well as behind the scenes shots, interviews, and photo gallery, to name but a few.

' It is a life story actually; this is our first DVD release ever since we ventured into music. Our videos have been traditionally shot for television, but this time we want to give our fans a chance to watch Eskimos in their living rooms,' adds Eskimos dance and singer Java, real name Goitsemodimo Binang.

Just before the official release on Thursday, Eskimos are hosting a preview session for the local media at Maitisong, which is also a venue for film and performances.

Since they ventured into music Eskimos have released five albums, Back to Kasi, Faratlhatlha, Makimo, Still Makimo, and Ompimpile, the latter having been released only last year.

Javas says the DVD release will next month be accompanied by a CD release, also marking the group's decade in the music industry. He says to celebrate this, Eskimos have been able to team up with South Africa's Durban House giants, Smallz of Money Maker fame, for a track that will be in the September compilation. They have also collaborated with local acts, Real Magosi, on another track that will form part of the celebrations, according to Javas. Eskimos consist of Javas, Zynne( Kabo Mmolawa), Mandla(Keitshupile Mokwena), Kay-Gee (Kagiso Ketsanthwa).

In their 10-year history Eskimos have worked with local companies such as DDS, Ramco, BMM, but have now founded their own establishment, Eskimos Productions, through which they partly released their last album.

Eskimos say they are proud that today they are releasing their commemorative DVD and album as an independent company; something they say is a confirmation of their growth in the music business.
