Constituency league stirs discomfort in volleyball

Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) president, Daniel Molaodi like his Botswana Football Association (BFA) counterpart, David Fani wants the running of the league reviewed.

Molaodi said the introduction of the constituency league in volleyball has seen the departure of some players from registered clubs.

He said some players participate in the constituency league before they de-register with the BVF clubs.

Molaodi said they recently received a report from one club, complaining that it had lost four players to the constituency league.

It is believed that financial incentives doled out in the constituency league attract players who are forced to dump BVF clubs.Molaodi said the constituency league will negatively affect BVF competitions.

He suggested that the running of the constituency league should be changed so that there is balance between its activities and those of the BVF.

He wants the BVF to be allocated part of the constituency league money to be used for talent identification.

He criticised the running of the constituency league, arguing that it is haphazard. Molaodi said the aim of the constituency league should be mass participation rather than financial incentives.

However, unlike in football, BVF will not face sanctions from the Federation International Volleyball (FIVB) and Confederation of African volleyball (CAVB) because of the constituency league. Molaodi said the rules and regulations of the two bodies are silent on the issue.

He said the federation has engaged the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the Department of Sports and Recreation (DSR) with a view to mapping the way forward regarding the constituency league.
