GU will improve this season - Mgadla

He said they have learnt from the mistakes they made last season when they posted a below-par performance and they are determined to prove their critics wrong.

He believes that the team's involvement in CAF competitions took its toll on the players and impacted negatively on the league campaign.

Although Mgadla has been GU's best performer in the CAF competitions, having scored four goals, he has not done well in the league since joining from Mogoditshane Fighters.

The 23-year-old admitted that he has not performed to expectations and he would like to do better in the new season to help the Reds win silverware. 'It was awesome to score that goal against Dynamos in Zimbabwe, breaking their 18-year history of not conceding to any visiting team though we ended up 4-1 losers. I have to admit that I should have done better but it is no use complaining about something that has already passed. It is rather important to improve our performance,' he said.

He explained that preparations for the CAF games and the league were different and adjusting was always difficult. He said their good performance in Africa could have come as a result of playing unknown opponents.

'There was always that element of surprise from our side when we played these African clubs but local teams know each and every player at GU.

It was difficult to beat them. Then there was a problem of having to adjust, prepare this way this week and change to adapt to the local style a few days later. Coupled with fatigue, we struggled,' he explained.

Mgadla believes the heavy defeat to Egypt's El Haras Hodood in the CAF Confederations Cup a fortnight ago could have come as a blessing in disguise. He said that would give them time to fully focus on doing well on the local front.

'I don't have any idea how we lost that match but we just want to put it behind us and move on. I believe we played better in Egypt than we did in Gaborone but we lost heavily.  We can try to justify our case by talking about the bad refereeing but the question would be how did they manage eight goals. We obviously wanted to go further but it has ended and maybe it is for our own good,' he said.
