Dibotelo was set to retire from service when he turns 70 in October, which is retirement age of High Court judges, including Chief Justice, in terms of the Section 97(1) of the Constitution.

“Last month the Judicial Service Commission, after taking into account the volume of cases before me, made the recommendation to the President in terms of the proviso to section 97(1) of the Constitution to permit me to continue in office up to April 30, 2018 for the purpose of completing proceedings that were commenced before I reached the retirement age.

“His Excellency the President has approved the recommendation and has extended my tenure of office up to and including April 30, 2018,” he added. Dibotelo said he would bid members of the judiciary farewell at appropriate occasions. There is uncertainty as to who will succeed Dibotelo when he leaves next year. Dibotelo was appointed Chief Justice in February 2010, succeeding the late Julian Nganunu.

He attended the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS) from 1970 to 1975, where he studied Bachelor of Laws (LLB). In obtaining his LLB degree he studied and passed courses such as Criminal Law, Law of Contract and Delict, Government and Administration, Customary Law, Law of Property, Evidence and Procurement, Sociology, Criminology, International Law and Organisations, English Language and Literature and Law of the Sea etc.

He was admitted as attorney of the High Court of Botswana on June 17, 1977.

Meanwhile, the AOJ held its first excellence awards 2017, which are meant to reward outstanding performance of officers. It is said that the excellence awards cost the AOJ over P700,000.
