Wasteful Gunners Rue Missed Chances

Proven goal scorer, Kenanao ‘Flo’ Kgetholetsile missed a glorious chance after a good run down in the left by Thabo Metlhayotlhe and a good cross. With only Raphael Nthwane to beat, his effort went wide. He had earlier headed wide after being set up by Ofentse Mmipi.  Sharps also had chances with Langa Mabuli proving too difficult to mark for Gunners defenders on the wings.

He forced his way into the Gunners area three times in the first half from the left, but was let down by poor positioning and decision making between him and his fellow attackers. Two minutes before half time, Gunners failed to take the lead once again when Kgetholetsile and Mandla Mgadla combined well and set up Metlhayotlhe who did everything right but was amazingly denied by Nthwane. Despite a busy first half, the sides went into half time with a 0-0 scoreline. Two minutes into the second half, Metlhayotlhe made another one of his brilliant runs and passed to Mgadla who played a one-two with Mmipi. Mmipi laid a brilliant cross, which found Mgadla in a good position but Nthwane’s experience proved too vital for Sharps as he stopped Mgadla’s shot inside the box.

In the last minute, Gunners launched another attack and Mgadla appeared clear on goal but was fouled by Modisaotsile on the edge of the box. Referee Lekgotla Johannes issued a straight red card for the offence. Mmipi took a shot but hit the wall before the ball bounced back to Mgadla whose shot hit the upright before going out for a goal kick.

In a post match interview, Sharps’ assistant coach Davis Kopi admitted that Gunners were the better side on the day and that the result could have been different had Gunners took their chances. He, however said he does not believe stage fright could have played a role in the performance but added that Gunners did most things right than his side. Gunners’ coach, Itumeleng Duiker said they wasted too many chances but was happy that his charges managed to enjoy the game.
