That is what unknown intrepid men did on Saturday night at Nkoyaphiri. They broke into the retired Brigadier’s home, poisoning his dogs before breaking into the house and stealing his children’s bicycles, a plasma TV set and other belongings.

The intruders were fortunate that he did not see them. Though he claims he was away in Serowe at the time, a close associate however revealed that Kgokgothwane must have been sleeping comatose in his bedroom, and the assailants made sure not to rouse him.

The friend alleged that he (Kgokgothwane) was soon spotted around Mogoditshane personally seeking out the culprits.

The name Kgokgothwane is synonymous with dangerous endeavours such as taming lions and snakes at the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Sir Seretse Khama Barracks in the 1990s and early 2000s. The man was said to saunter  around the BDF camp accompanied by a pride of lions, and that slithering snakes that he got as a present when he retired from the army more than eight years ago, were his bosom buddies.

Mogoditshane police station commander, Superintendent Agreement Mapeu confirmed the break-in.

“We have not arrested anyone in relation to the offence,” Mapeu added yesterday.

He said the burglars poisoned Kgokgothwane's two dogs and jumped over the boundary wall. He said that the police did not know yet what the thieves used to destroy the door to gain access into the house.

Meanwhile, Mapeu said they are investigating another break-in at Kays Filling Station on Tuesday early morning around 4.30am.

“Intruders managed to gain access into the filling station premises and walked away with money amounting to close to P700 that was left in the till,” Mapeu said.

He said the security guards who were on duty that night said they only saw three people running away from the filling station premises, but unfortunately they failed to see their faces since it was still a bit dark.

“The security guards tried to chase them, but they threatened them with knives,” Mapeu said.
