ECCO were originally called Francistown City Greens Sporting Club before being sponsored by Botswana Meat Commission (BMC), which led to them changing their name to ECCO to accommodate the sponsor.
City Greens public relations officer, Sylvester Patella said the change came after one of the resolutions taken at the club’s annual general meeting (AGM) in June, whereby the new committee employed a task force of three members to engage the supporters in a move that was aimed at changing the club’s name, logo, colours and slogan ahead of the new season.
He said the decision was taken after intensive engagement with club supporters hence an agreement was reached to change the team name and logo.
He revealed that City Greens were formed way back around 1980s but it was officially registered in 1992 as Francistown City Greens. “Remember that was until we found a sponsor which was Botswana Meat Commission and we changed the name of the club to ECCO which is one of BMC’s canned beef product.
It is important to appreciate and thank the commitment that BMC has shown during the time they spent sponsoring the team.
We are where we are because of their input,” he said. Patella further said they also changed the logo but the colours will remain unchanged. City Greens became the first team from the north to win the Premier League in 2007. The history making team, which was under the tutelage of Barry Daka had the likes of Malepa Bolelang who was crowned top goal scorer earning himself a nick name King goals, Basarutweng ‘Booster’ Magola, Nicolas Matlhare, Faith Keletso, Robert Tamba, Mandlenkosi Sibanda and Tebogo Sembowa amongst others.
