There are two inter-club competitions left before the BoBA national championships. The Warders won all their bouts including the much anticipated clash between Mmusi Tswiigi and Lentswe Zwinila of Glen Valley club.

The duo finally tested each other’s strength after failing to meet in various inter-clubs and Tswiigi prevailed.

It was sweet victory for Tswiigi who has been complaining about lack of action due to the unavailability of local opponents.

Prison’s coach, Buwembo Sande Mpigi told Mmegi Sport that the outcome of the weekend competition is an indication that their eyes are set on the national championships. He said they have been working hard on training boxers since 2016.

“We have been working hard since the last national championships because we do not want to leave anything to chance. Boxing is a funny sport, you can wake up today thinking that you are the best only to be beaten by a rookie,” he said.

Mpigi said he always encourages his boxers to avoid being big headed, thinking that they are the best in the country. He said celebrations could only happen after they have defended the title. He said they always come with different formations in all competitions to avoid opponents catching them unaware.

He said there are many upcoming boxers across the country and the only thing that needs to be done is to groom them. He said having balanced boxers would increase competition and attract potential sponsors.

“Boxing is a big money spinner in other countries. But here we are struggling to attract sponsors. We have to come up with ways of changing that. The business community must recognise us but they can only do that if we take ourselves seriously and improve our boxing standard,” Mpigi said.

Results for Prisons boxers: Gillian Ditshwene (Prisons) beat Tefo Maitewa (Thebephatshwa), Matlhane Bashs (Prisons) beat Johnson Kulube (Mafika), Ireen Modikwa (Prisons) beat Gorata Morwe (Gantsi).
