The Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Examinations (BGCSE) start next week, with learners pursuing Statistics forced to sit for the exam because by virtue of being an international examination, written by other countries, the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has no authority to reschedule it.

“This is an international paper, so there is no way it can be moved because candidates in other countries would have written the exam already, so it is only proper for local candidates to sit for the paper on that date,” corporate communications manager, Fingile Makgalemele explained.

It was not clear by press time how invigilators would be compansated for working during a public holiday. The law states that any employee who works on a paid public holiday shall be paid at least double the wages he or she would have been paid had the day been an ordinary working day; or be granted a paid day off within 10 days immediately thereafter.

“Invigilators are employed by the Ministry of Basic Education who are the ones who negotiate issues of payment with teachers.  So, I don’t know how this one will be treated,” Makgalemele said.

Meanwhile, the two-hour 15 minutes Statistics exam will be taken Monday morning. Literature in English and Agriculture multiple choice papers follow in the morning and afternoon respectively. The BGCSE exams end on November 10 with a French paper.
