Pilane says Orange wants to bring financial services closer to Botswana

This development follows impressive growth and performance of the Orange Money Visa Card, which accounted for 24% of the debit cards in the country.

Speaking during the launch this week, Orange Money director, Seabelo Pilane said they have decided to make the card a Visa as part of their endeavour to promote financial inclusion and make it convenient for their customers travelling outside the country.

“Orange decided to introduce this card as the current card has performed well in the market and continues to do so competing impressively with cards issued by the local banks,” he said.

He said as at June 2016, Orange Money Visa Card accounted for 24% of the debit cards in the market and expected this figure to grow with the introduction of their new enhanced Visa card.

The new Orange Money Visa Card’s main features include a new card design, as well as a chip and pin functionality, which accords their customers an opportunity to withdraw and swipe at any Visa-authorised automated teller machine( ATM) or Point of Sale (POS) terminals internationally.

According to Pilane, this card is ideal for students, companies that have employees who travel regionally or globally.

“We continue to challenge ourselves to provide relevant services to our customers including progress in terms of our continued participation in Botswana’s financial landscape,” he said.

Orange introduced Orange Money Card in 2013 in partnership with Visa Inc. and the transactions at Visa-authorised ATM’s and POS ‘swiping’ machines were only possible in Botswana. Through this partnership, Orange Money has afforded over 530,000 subscribers an opportunity to participate in financial transactions making Orange Money debit card a market leader by 70%. He said the development is one that Orange Money subscribers have been eagerly waiting for and that the evolution of the card is in line with Orange’s continued endeavour to promote financial inclusion and bring financial services even closer to Batswana. Orange Botswana marketing and communications manager, Lame Madiba said that they strive to provide innovative solutions that suit their customers’ needs.

“We put our customers first and to date we remain the first and only mobile network operator to offer a card linked to a mobile money wallet.  Through this new development we are taking our mobile money wallet to new levels with an enhanced extra security feature,” he said.
