Brand Botswana and the Botswana National Olympic Committee on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bringing the two entities closer to each other, with a greater aim of working together in the promotion of the country, using sport. The MoU amongst others addresses the following aspects:

l To work together to ensure that athletes are in a position to effectively brand the country through their sporting exploits,

l To provide a platform for dialogue and information exchange between parties in matters of mutual interest and benefit,

l To provide a platform for collaboration on advocacy matters.

Through the partnership, the two entities will work closely to empower athletes so that they can effectively promote Botswana. Sport is a powerful vehicle that can be used to brand and promote the country and such, Brand Botswana saw the need to formally engage the Botswana National Olympic Committee for closer working relations.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, BITC acting chief executive officer, Meshack Tshekedi said the formalisation of relations between the two entities will allow them to plan and work better together going forward. He emphasised the need for the partnership citing that sport creates a platform for the country to be known.

BNOC chief executive, Tuelo Serufho said sport arouses interest as evidenced by the recent world competitions like the Netball World Youth Cup and the Athletics World Championships.

He said the signing of the MoU will also facilitate for Botswana athletes to understand their role as Botswana Brand Ambassadors.

The MoU is for an initial two-year period, and will see the two entities collaborating on various initiatives.
