Gone in 67: Gaborone United have dumped their long standing brand

The brand - derived from the year in which the club was formed, 1967 - was introduced several years ago, a shift away from the normal trend of football clubs seeking technical sponsorships.

The club has since decided to ditch its own to follow established trends of sourcing technical sponsors because of the possible financial gain, club secretary, City Senne explained yesterday.

He said although brand 67 was a good idea, financially it did not benefit the club. Senne said the club found it difficult to design kits under the brand and sell to other teams since the logo only belonged to GU.

“We have since decided to engage technical sponsors like other clubs so that we can benefit financially because in all honesty, teams are struggling financially,” he said. He however said they have not completely ditched the brand since it still appears on the club’s logo.

Senne said at the moment they are still in talks with several potential technical sponsors although nothing concrete has been concluded thus far.

The club is celebrating its 50 years of existence with a number of activities lined up.

Amongst those activities will be a gala dinner.

“Except for the gala dinner, which will be part of the celebrations, other things are still being looked into. For now we have nothing concrete, but we are currently doing the branding which will include merchandise and a newsletter,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senne explained that the club could not hold the ordinary general meeting this past month since preparations for that meeting had not been concluded.

He said part of the reasons was that they were not prepared financially to hold the meeting, but assured GU supporters that it will be held at a date to be communicated. He said they are looking at people who can assist with finances to hold the meeting.
